Buddha's Birthday

This month, we celebrate Buddha’s Birthday on the 17th of May, the eighth day of the fourth lunar month.

By tradition, Hong Kong Buddhists bathe Buddha statues in bowl of water each year on this day as a ritual to purify one’s soul, and eat bitter green cookies to symbolize endurance through hardships.

These and other rituals can be observed in Buddhist temples across Hong Kong, with the grandest at Po Lin Monastery located opposite the Big Buddha. A magnificent sight, the Big Buddha (officially Tian Tan Buddha statue) took 12 years to build and sits 34 metres tall. Unlike most Buddha statues, this Buddha faces north, overlooking China and protecting its citizens. Climb the 268 steps for a closer look, and enjoy the landscape that could be seen from its base.
